• Won 2007 British Royal Television Society (RTS) award for innovation in multimedia TV news reporting. • Conceived and developed Your News, the first-ever long-form news show on British TV made entirely from citizen journalism / user-generated content (UGC). • Transformed BBC News’ use of social media, making BBC News the most popular overall British broadcaster on the most high-profile social media spaces. Professional experience and achievements British Broadcasting Corporation BBC News, Senior Broadcast Journalist / Breaking News writer, April 2010 – present Responsibilities Write breaking news flashes and scripts based on wire material and internal BBC copy for use on all main BBC TV and radio outlets in the UK and around the world. Copy taste, write and publish ready-to-run scripts based on third-party sources such as social media. Write and manage core BBC News Twitter accounts (@BBCBreaking, @BBCNews, @BBCWorld), BBC News Facebook and Google+ pages, amongst other social media platforms BBC News uses. Achievements Wrote and published copy during some of the biggest news stories of the last twelve months including the continuing unrest across the Arab world, the riots in London and the capture of Osama bin Laden. Established new methods for using social media to promote BBC News content and engage with its audience, making BBC News the most-‘liked’ British broadcaster on Facebook and the most-followed on Twitter with more than four million followers on all accounts. Responsibilities Continue to fill ad hoc shifts on the channel, managing all aspects of live story production and packaging for Britain’s most-watched news channel. Duties include copy-writing and producing news reports, booking contributors and guests, producing sequences, graphics and other on-air editorial elements. Experience in producing OBs and field producing. Achievements Have produced rolling news content during live coverage of some of the biggest stories in recent times including the 2005 Boxing Day tsunami and the July 7th terror attacks in London. On output team the year the channel won Royal Television Society “News Channel of the Year” award for the first time. BBC News, UGC Multimedia Broadcast Journalist, Jan 2009 – Mar 2010 Responsibilities Commissioned, generated, gathered and editorially assessed UGC for use by UK and global BBC News output on all the platforms. Interviewed contributors, using various tools including Skype, to write and publish UGC stories for all BBC outlets. Editorially managed online web indexes, presented audience interactivity on and plus coordinated BBC newsroom engagement and activity on social media. UGC Multimedia Broadcast Journalist achievements Helped BBC News scoop and lead reporting on a range of major UK and international news stories, from the disputed June 2009 presidential elections in Iran to scooping the world’s media to an interview with the Dutch film producer who tackled the underwear bomber on Northwest Airlines flight 253. TV Producer, Your News for BBC News & Current Affairs, Nov 2006 – Dec 2008 Responsibilities Appointed by BBC News Channel boss to develop Your News, a new long-form television news program of original content based on citizen journalism shared with the BBC and other social media. Led the TV production team in finding and commissioning original journalism, show-scripting, shooting and overseeing the final edit. Contributed to the management of high profile anchors, staff and technical crews and budgets with providing clear and constructive feedback. Your News achievements Won 2007 RTS multimedia award for using social media and citizen journalism to report on summer flooding in large parts of the UK, work which the judges described as “BBC News at it most brilliant best.” Boosted channel’s weekend viewership, making Your News the most-watched long-form news show for its slot on the BBC’s 24-hour news channel. TV Producer, Sky News, January 2003 – April 2004 Responsibilities Wrote and produced all onscreen copy, text and graphics. Other duties included guest-booking and copy writing. Achievements Working in the control room, I produced content during some of the most important moments of the 2003 invasion of Iraq including the first night of “shock and awe” in Baghdad and the day US troops marched into the capital and toppled the statue of Saddam Hussein. Radio Senior Producer, Primedia Broadcasting South Africa, Dec 1999 – Dec 2002 Responsibilities Co-produced the flagship breakfast show on 567MW CapeTalk radio in Cape Town, a speech-based radio station in South Africa. Filed and reported live for company’s Eyewitness News service on 702 Talk Radio in Johannesburg and CapeTalk. Achievements Won invitation by Nelson Mandela to report from the behind the scenes and attend his final address as president to South Africa’s parliament. Technical skills and training Trained in ENPS, iNews, VizRT and other bespoke broadcast news applications. Also trained and experienced in using social media applications such as Comufy, Tweetdeck, Cotweet, Word Press, Blogger, Movable Type, DNA comment aggregation. Advanced ability in using Sony Z1 and Z5 camcorders and Nikon digital photo equipment. Experience in FinalCut, iMovie, Adobe Avid iXpress, Photoshop Elements. Also expert in web-based social media applications like Vimeo, YouTube, Flickr, Audioboo and others.
